What Is a PS2 BIOS?

BIOS stands for Basic Input/Output System. On the PlayStation 2, it lives on a chip inside the console. It runs the moment you press the power button. Sony wrote it, and each console model shipped with its own version.

Why PCSX2 Needs a BIOS

PCSX2 recreates the PS2 hardware in software. It does not recreate Sony’s firmware. The PCSX2 team says the emulator cannot play games without a BIOS, and no open-source replacement exists. Android emulators built from PCSX2 code have the same requirement.

What the BIOS Does Inside the Console

  • Starts the Emotion Engine CPU, Graphics Synthesizer, I/O processor and SPU2 sound chip
  • Shows the system menu for clock, language and screen settings
  • Reads and writes memory card saves
  • Checks the disc region before a game loads
  • Runs original PlayStation games through backward compatibility
  • Plays DVD movies and audio CDs
  • Shows the Red Screen of Death when it cannot read or verify a disc

People often call the BIOS file a “ROM” because it comes from a read-only memory chip. A BIOS ROM and a BIOS image are the same thing.

How to Install PS2 BIOS

You can get a working PS2 BIOS in two ways. Pick the method that suits you, then finish setup in under five minutes.

Method 1

Download from ps2biosdownloads.com

  • Download the BIOS for your region from the cards above.
  • Extract the ZIP to reveal the BIOS files.
  • Place the files in your emulator’s BIOS folder.
  • Open the emulator, go to BIOS settings and select your version.

Method 2

Dump from your own PS2

  • Boot your PS2 with FreeMcBoot or FreeDVDBoot.
  • Run biosdrain from a FAT32 USB drive.
  • Copy the files to your PC and check the SHA1 hash.
  • Add them to your emulator’s BIOS folder and select them.

PS2 BIOS Files Explained

A proper BIOS is not a single file. It is a small set. The recommended dumping tool, biosdrain, names each file after the console model and gives them extensions like .rom0, .rom1 and .nvm.

Keep the whole set in one folder. The main image boots your games, and the rest help the emulator behave like a real console.

Only the main image is required to boot games. The companion files help the emulator match real console behavior, so keep the full set together.

How to Check a BIOS File Is Clean

The Redump project keeps hashes for every PS2 BIOS version. Compare your dump’s SHA1 hash with Redump’s list. A match means the file is clean.

Windows

Open PowerShell and run:

Get-FileHash yourfile.rom0 -Algorithm SHA1

macOS

Open Terminal and run:

shasum -a 1 yourfile.rom0

Linux

Open a terminal and run:

sha1sum yourfile.rom0

PS2 BIOS Versions by Region and SCPH Model

Sony made the PS2 from 2000 until 2013 and released dozens of models. Each one has an SCPH number on the label at the back or bottom of the console.

USA PS2 BIOS (NTSC-U)

This region covers games sold in the United States and Canada. The SCPH-39001 is a popular fat model with BIOS version 1.6 from 2002. The SCPH-70012 is the most common American slim. Both work well for US games in PCSX2.

How to Read an SCPH Model Number

The first digits show the hardware series. The final digit often points to the region: 0 for Japan, 1 for USA and Canada, 3 for the UK and 4 for Europe. Exceptions exist, such as the US slim SCPH-70012, so confirm your model on Redump.

Fat vs Slim PS2 Models

Fat models cover the 10000 to 50000 series, sold from 2000 to 2004. The slim arrived in 2004 with the 70000 series. Both run games equally well in PCSX2. The difference matters when you dump, because some methods skip the newest slims.

Does the BIOS Version Affect Performance?

No. Many sites claim the USA BIOS runs faster, but that is a myth. A PCSX2 forum staff member said two different BIOS versions perform identically, and save states work between them. Your frame rate depends on your hardware and settings.

PAL · Europe, Australia

Many PAL games include a 60 Hz option. If a European game feels sluggish, look for it first.

Can You Keep More Than One BIOS?

Yes. Put every dump in one folder and PCSX2 lists them all. Switch under Settings, then BIOS. Many games boot with the wrong region, but a matching BIOS avoids language and timing quirks.

Risks of BIOS Packs and Archive Downloads

  • Wrong labels: sites disagree on which SCPH model fits which region.
  • Missing files: many packs ship only the main image.
  • Unwanted software: repacked “PCSX2 plus BIOS” bundles may hide extras.
  • Copyright exposure: downloading Sony’s firmware is where legal trouble starts.

Moving From AetherSX2

Your BIOS works in every PCSX2-based emulator. Copy it over along with your memory card files, and your saves come with you.

BIOS Setup on RetroArch, Steam Deck, Mac and Xbox

The same BIOS works across PCSX2-based emulators on every platform. Only the folder changes.

RetroArch

The LRPS2 core reads the BIOS from system/pcsx2/bios inside RetroArch’s system folder.

Steam Deck

EmuDeck installs PCSX2 for you. Put your files in the Emulation/bios folder it creates.

Mac

PCSX2 runs on Apple Silicon Macs through Rosetta 2, according to its official requirements page.

Xbox Series X|S

XBSX2 is a PCSX2 fork adapted for Xbox. It uses the same BIOS files.

iPhone and iPad

Options are limited. Apple’s limits on JIT compilation make PS2 emulation slower on iOS than on Android.

Common PS2 BIOS Errors and How to Fix Them

Most BIOS errors come down to file location or file format.

Cause: The files are still zipped, sit in the wrong folder, or PCSX2 points somewhere else.

Fix: Extract the files. Open Settings, then BIOS. Browse to your BIOS folder and click Refresh.

Cause: PCSX2 cannot save its settings. This often happens when Documents syncs to OneDrive.

Fix: Move the BIOS to a local folder that is not synced, then select it again.

Cause: A damaged game image, a renderer problem or a region quirk.

Fix: Switch the renderer between Vulkan and Direct3D 11. Try Full Boot. Check your game dump if it continues.

Cause: The BIOS region does not match the game.

Fix: Check the game’s serial prefix and select a BIOS from the same region.

Cause: The file is incomplete or is not a real BIOS image. A main BIOS should be about 4 MB.

Fix: Check the file size and compare its hash with Redump.

PS2 BIOS FAQs

Yes. PCSX2 cannot boot PS2 games without a BIOS file. The emulator recreates the hardware but not Sony’s firmware, so you need a BIOS dump from a real PlayStation 2 console.

The best BIOS matches your game’s region. For US games, use an NTSC-U dump like SCPH-39001 or SCPH-70012. Every version performs the same, so region matters more than model number.

On Windows, the default folder is Documents\PCSX2\bios. You can also open it from the setup wizard or from Settings, then BIOS. Copy your files there and click Refresh.

Usually the file is still inside a ZIP or sits in the wrong folder. Extract it, place it in your BIOS folder, then point PCSX2 to that folder under Settings and click Refresh.

Many games boot anyway, but some show the wrong language or refuse to start. For the fewest problems, keep one BIOS per region and switch to the matching one before playing.

The main BIOS image is about 4 MB. A full dump also includes smaller companion files like .rom1, .nvm and .mec. If your main file is much smaller, it is probably incomplete.

The BIOS is copyrighted Sony software. The PCSX2 team says to dump it from a PS2 you own. Downloading copies from websites can break copyright law, depending on where you live.

Quick Setup Checklist

Six steps from a real console to your first game.
